SiegelBlick
Maxim Zitnikowski
SiegelBlick reads the barcode of a food package and checks the open database Open Food Facts to see if a sustainability label is listed for that product.
Simply hold the barcode up to the camera—that's all it takes.
FACTS INSTEAD OF ASSESSMENT
SiegelBlick doesn't assign grades or make recommendations. The app simply shows you what's in the database. What you do with that information is entirely up to you.
NINE SEALS, YOUR CHOICE
Rainforest Alliance is the default. In the settings, you can add more: UTZ, Fairtrade, Demeter, Naturland, Bioland, MSC, ASC, and GMO-free. For each label, you'll find information about the issuing organization and the certification body, along with source details.
REPORT GAPS
Is there a label on the packaging but not in the database? Report the missing label directly in the app, optionally with up to three photos of the packaging. This helps to complete the open database.
DATA PROTECTION
No user account, no tracking, no advertising IDs, no scan history. When looking up information, only the scanned barcode is transmitted to Open Food Facts. The camera image remains on the device during scanning.
Google's ML Kit recognizes the barcode directly on the device. ML Kit reports technical usage and diagnostic data to Google, including an installation identifier; according to Google, it does not send the camera image or barcode.
If you report a vulnerability, the barcode, the checked seals, the operating system, and the app version are sent to a server in Germany. No name, no account, no device identifier. Reporting is voluntary.
Photos are also voluntary. They are only sent if you take them yourself and consent to their publication on Open Food Facts. The app removes the location and device information beforehand.
Only three things are stored on the device: which seals you are monitoring, whether the rollout has already taken place, and how many reports you have submitted today.
INDEPENDENT
SiegelBlick is an independent, private project. It has no connection to the organizations behind the seals or to Open Food Facts. The seal names are trademarks of their respective owners and are used solely for descriptive purposes to refer to the entry in the database.
Data provided by Open Food Facts (ODbL).
