Patience is a great virtue, granted only to those of great fortune. Ignorance of its true nature is ignorance of a great branch of faith.

It is a clear station of the religion, a station of God's guided servants, and a characteristic of the resolute and successful. Nothing demonstrates the value of patience more clearly than the fact that its reward is limitless! God Almighty has promised to reward the patient without measure, as He, the Exalted, said: {Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure} [Surat Az-Zumar 10].

While the reader may already be familiar with the topic of patience, they will undoubtedly encounter new insights in this book, things they may not have encountered before. The author, the memorizer and educator Abu Bakr Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Ad-Dunya—as is his custom in his books—presents us with wondrous accounts and stories, and rare and unusual sayings and tales, some of which are painful and harsh. Indeed, it contains hadiths that I have not found narrated by anyone other than the author himself; he may even be the sole narrator of them. And God knows best.

God Almighty has promised to reward the patient without measure, as He, the Almighty, has said: {Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure} [Surat Az-Zumar 10]. The author: Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr, Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Ubayd ibn Sufyan ibn Qays al-Baghdadi al-Qurashi, a freedman of the Banu Umayya (208 AH - 281 AH), nicknamed Ibn Abi al-Dunya (a nickname that became more commonly used than his given name). Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr was born in Baghdad in the early third century AH, in the year 208 AH. He was an Arab historian and educator who tutored the Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tadid and his son al-Muktafi Billah. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir, may God have mercy on him, said of him in Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah: "He was famous for his numerous, beneficial, widely circulated, and widely known works on matters of spiritual refinement and other subjects. He was truthful, a memorizer of hadith, and a man of integrity."

- Talking about patience is easy, but the real test is in its application. We can sing the praises of patience day and night, but who among us can truly practice it in their lives? Even in the smallest situations? Patience in refraining from saying a hurtful word? From an angry look? From a groan of pain? From a sigh of distress? From a slip or mistake against God? From a sin that Satan whispers in your mind is minor, and God is forgiving! If we have patience in abstaining from the little, it is the path to the stages of advancement. The real test is not in being patient with what the soul detests of sins and forbidden things, or in doing what the soul desires of good and righteous deeds. Rather, it is in abandoning what it desires of sins and doing what it is lazy about of acts of obedience. Herein lies patience and its true meaning. Whenever an event occurs that requires patience, the words of one of the predecessors ring in my ears: “Either be patient with the patience of the noble, or be forgetful with the forgetfulness of animals.” I am still afraid that I will be tested in my patience. I do not know to what extent I can endure. I fear that my failure and lack of resolve will be revealed to me quickly. And I have come across in this book a patience that I am unable to imagine, so how can I live with it? However, I realize that they were not superhuman, but human beings of flesh and blood. But whoever is patient, God will grant them patience.

- O God, I ask You for beautiful patience that will help me obey You, keep me away from disobeying You, and make me content with Your decree and destiny.

Heba

- Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure. When we hear about patience, all we remember is patience in the face of affliction of all kinds, whether it be illness, poverty, or humiliation. But we always forget patience in obeying what God has commanded us and patience in refraining from sins and avoiding them, which is the most difficult kind of patience. In a hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The best jihad is for a man to strive against his own soul and desires." So, may our Lord bless us with all kinds of patience. The book is a compilation of hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), some of the Companions and Followers, and their words about patience and its virtue, and some stories about patience. But unfortunately, it contains many weak hadiths and is merely a compilation without commentary or explanation from the author.

Amr Mohamed

- In the end, the lesson It's not about patience itself, but about what you endure for. Even animals endure, and even the least determined person endures, forced to be patient. True patience is to be patient even when you are capable of despairing, to be patient for a noble purpose—to please God Almighty—and for patience to be an inherent quality within you, not a burden. It's about patience by choice, not by compulsion; patience in obedience, not patience of despair and complaint. O God, inspire us with patience, teach us how to be patient, and increase us in the wellspring of patience and reward from You, O Lord of the Worlds.
