You start on the ice next to a drilled hole. Press cast, and a marker begins to travel along the bite indicator at the top of the screen. Tap it inside the right zone and the fish takes the bait. From that point the fish fights back, the indicator keeps moving, and you keep tapping in order to reel it in. Land every tap and the fish comes up through the ice. Miss the rhythm and the line goes slack and the fish is gone. One cast takes under a minute, which makes the game easy to play in short breaks.

Each fish has a name, a size and a score. When a trip ends, the result screen shows your best catch of the trip, how many fish you landed, the score you earned and your current level, and it marks a new personal best whenever you beat your old record. Cast again sends you straight back to the hole. Back to deck returns you to your boat, where your totals, your top catch and your daily streak are kept.

Landed fish are worth in game coins, and coins go back into your equipment. Better rods and stronger line hold larger fish. Better bait attracts rarer species. Warmer gear and a better boat open up colder and deeper fishing spots, where the fish are heavier, the scores are higher and the timing windows are tighter. Progress is steady rather than random: the more you fish, the better your equipment, and the better your equipment, the bigger the species you can realistically land.

Levels rise with your total catch, and new locations unlock as you level up. A daily streak counter rewards coming back day after day. Personal records are stored for every species you have pulled out of the ice, so your logbook slowly fills with the best fish of each kind.

Everything in the game stays inside the game. Coins, scores and levels exist only to unlock fishing gear and new spots. There are no real money prizes, no wagering and no gambling mechanics of any kind.

Winter fishing, one hole in the ice, a rod, and your reaction. That is the whole game.
